Papers, posters, and presentations aren't the only outlets through which PSS students are communicating the weight of their scientific achievements: doctoral student Swarupa Mandal recently had two photos place in the 2021 ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Photo Contest.

Swarupa Mandal - Preliminary yield trial
Preliminary yield trial — A rice field after transplanting, where a preliminary yield trial experiment is going on in randomized complete block design in a farm of West Bengal, India. In yield trials experiments, a set of cultivars are assessed for varietal recommendations.
Swarupa Mandal - System of Rice Intensification
System of Rice Intensification — Sustainable intensification of rice production is critical to accomplishing increased demand for foods and mitigating poverty in rice-based farming systems. The photo depicts a rice panicle on the day of anthesis in a farm working on conservation agriculture with rice landraces using the System of Rice Intensification.

The photos — titled Preliminary yield trial and System of Rice Intensification — were entered in the contest category ASA: Agronomy Feeds the World, and were awarded second and third place, respectively.

This was a first shot at entering the photo contest for Mandal, whose current research focuses on the development of new crop varieties that can help strengthen global food security in the face of environmental challenges.

Mandal's winning photos will be displayed in a spring issue of CSA News, the official magazine for members of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA.
