Practicum Training Options and Rotations

There are two tracks for practicum at the Student Counseling Center:  Short practicum and full practicum. Any practicum students can choose to do short practicum at any point in their training with us; however, after their initial short practicum, preference may be given to students applying for the full practicum.  We generally prefer that students choose the full practicum if they can work it out with their schedules due to it being a more in-depth experience (including the possibility of doing a rotation), but we will consider students doing more than one semester of a short practicum if it can be accommodated given our constraints on how many students we can train each semester.

Short Practicum - Weekly Practicum Hours
  • 5 Client Contact Hours
  • 1 Intake Hour/Week (between 1 - 5 pm)
  • 1 Individual Supervision Hour
  • 1 Group Supervision Hour (1 hour; time TBD based on students' schedules)
  • 1 Administrative Hour
  • 9 TOTAL HOURS/WEEK
Full Practicum - Weekly Practicum Hours
  • 9 Client Contact Hours
  • 1 Intake Hour/Week (between 1 - 5 pm)
  • 1.5 Individual Supervision hours
  • 1 Group Supervision hour(1 hour; time TBD based on students' schedules)
  • 2 Administrative Hours (at least one hour should be scheduled at Center)

Rotations:

A training rotation is optional; if a student is interested, s/he may request to participate in one of the following rotations to obtain more experience in one of the subsequent areas:

  1. Group Therapy:
As a practicum student you have the opportunity to get involved with our group therapy program, which has become rather popular. Your first time participating in the group rotation, you can participate as a process observer and then in subsequent semesters you can participate as a group co-leader. All practicum students doing the group rotation will also need to participate in a training prior to participating in group which will be conducted by the SCC groups coordinator prior to / at the very beginning of the semester. This rotation is only available to those students who are enrolled in the full practicum. Note that additional time commitment is required (1 hour).
  2. Relationship Enhancement Center (Spring Semester):
The Relationship Enhancement Center, REC, provides a special focus on relationship' therapy in a unique setting with live supervision. This is a rich opportunity to develop your skills as a couples'/relationship therapist. Note that this rotation is only available during the spring and is only available to those students who are enrolled in the full practicum. Note that additional time commitment is required (2 hours).

Note:

  • Rotations are only available to students in full practicum.
