Training Components

Provision of supervision:

Interns supervise two to three practicum students over the course of the year. Practicum students are primarily from the TTU doctoral programs in Counseling & Clinical Psychology.  We also have practicum students from the MFT master's program these students are supervised by one of our MFT therapists.

Assessment:

Interns participate in a number of assessment-focused training seminars at the beginning of the year. At the end of orientation interns then choose an assessment supervisor to supervise completion of at least two formal personality assessments of SCC clients.

Group Therapy:

Taking into account the interns' interests areas, interns co-facilitate one to two therapy groups during each semester for a total of 4 groups over the course of internship.  Similarly, interns can choose two optional rotations per semester.

Provision of Individual Therapy:

Interns carry a caseload of approximately 15-18 individual clients, depending on what other rotations chosen, some of which may be clients related to a specific rotation.  Supervision is provided by the primary supervisor as well as rotation supervisors and group co-leaders. Supervision, both in quality and in quantity, is a definite strength of our program.

OTHER STRENGTHS OF THE PROGRAM

The Student Counseling Center is housed in the beautiful Student Wellness Center along with Student Health Services. Intern offices are similar to professional staff offices, and equipped with a phone, digital videotaping capability, a Dell computer with on-line access, two monitors, a variable standing-desk, and a printer. The new facility also houses a state of the art MindSpa with massage chair, Xbox for yoga and mindfulness activities, and heart rate variability software that allows students to monitor physiological signs of stress and learn how to relax physically as well as mentally.

Interns are treated as colleagues-in-training and their input into all Student Counseling Center activities is highly valued. The warm, supportive environment at the Student Counseling Center encourages the type of experimentation and exploration essential for professional development.

Funding is provided for travel to the Texas Counseling Center Psychology Internship Conference and other professional development activities, as departmental budget allows.

Interns receive 5 days of professional development leave time for the year. Professional Development Leave can be used for working on dissertation, travel for dissertation defense, conferences and trainings, or job interviews.

EVALUATION & SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF INTERNSHIP

APA's Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology outline nine areas interns must demonstrate competency in for successful completion of the internship. Competency Area ratings are provided by various supervisors for both the required training modalities and the optional rotations. Basic competence is expected of the interns and a minimum rating of "3" on each evaluation item is required at 6 months (6-point scale) and “4” at 12 months.
