Department Achievements in 2016

  • The department graduated seventy B.S., ten M.S., and six Ph.D. students in 2016.
  • Senior Hattie Schunk was named a Barry Goldwater Scholar.
  • Junior Crystal Blankenship was named a University Innovation Fellows (UIF).
  • Senior Brian Palomo and MS student Aric Denton were part of the Texas Tech team that won a silver medal at the 2016 iGEM Competition.
  • The ChE Car Team received first place in the poster competition and second place in the car competition at Regionals and competed at Nationals.
  • Ph.D. student Mizanur Rahman was awarded the Student Investigator Space Flight Award and Jennifer Hewitt won second place in the graduate student poster competition, both at the 2016 meeting of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research.
  • Ph.D. student Qian Tian won first place in the Student Poster Competition at the 2016 International Conference for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC).
  • Ph.D. student Md Islam won a travel grant to attend the 2016 International Conference on Properties and Phase Equilibria for Product and Process Design (PPEPPD) in Porto, Portugal.
  • Dr. Gregory McKenna received the DFG Mercator Fellowship to work with German scientists.
  • Dr. Harvind S. Gill received the Chancellor's Council Distinguished Researcher Award.
  • Dr. Carla Lacerda received the Texas Tech Alumni Association's 2016 New Faculty Award.
  • Dr. Ronald C. Hedden received the Spencer A. Wells Creativity in Teaching Award from the Texas Tech Parent's Association.
  • Dr. Sheima Khatib received a DOE Visiting Faculty Award to Brookhaven National Laboratory.
  • The department's total research expenditures in FY16 topped $ 5.6 M with the highest level of competitive federal expenditures per faculty member in the University for the third year running.
