Chair's Message

December 2016:

The end of the fall semester and the calendar year marks a time to reflect on the accomplishments of the previous year, as well as a time to reevaluate our goals and dreams. The Department of Chemical Engineering has a goal to be recognized as one of the top chemical engineering departments in the nation, and we are making strides towards that goal. Our faculty have been recognized in the last year for excellence in both teaching and research, and our students continue to receive honors. Recent news includes the following:

simon
  • Prof. Harvinder Gill was honored to receive the 2016 Chancellor's Council Distinguished Research Award.

  • Undergraduate Brian Palomo and graduate student Aric Denton were members of the iGEM team that won a silver medal at the 2016 competition.

  • Graduate students Mizanur Rahman and Jen Hewitt won awards at the 2016 meeting of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research.

  • The department maintained its stature as one of the top research department in the University with over $ 5.6 M in total research expenditures in fiscal year 2016 and the highest level of competitive federal expenditures per faculty member in the University for the third year running.

One question that alumni often ask is how can they help to ensure that Chemical Engineering at Tech continues to serve our students as effectively as we can. One way to make a difference is by donating your time and energy – on the department's External Advisory Board, in the Chemical Engineering Academy, or by talking to and recruiting high school students in your area – if you are interested in such service opportunities, contact me by phone or email. A second way to make a difference is to advocate for Tech in your company to provide internships and cooperative opportunities for our students, to recruit and hire at Tech, to sponsor alumni events, and to champion Texas Tech with corporate gifts. A third way to make a difference is to give directly to the department. We have a wide range of needs on our wish list, and your gift will make a difference in students' lives!
