Ag Pals Program

Ag Pals

The Davis College Ag Pal Program is dedicated to assisting undergraduate students during their transition into college by forming a bond between students in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources at Texas Tech University. Current undergraduate students volunteer to be paired with incoming undergraduate students to be a mentor for leadership, guidance, and friendship throughout the new student's transition into Davis College and Texas Tech. Ag Pals and Mentors attend Ag Fest and many other events together. Mentors are there to assist Ag Pals in their transition to college life, learning about Texas Tech and Davis College, getting involved in student organizations and getting to know the Lubbock community.

  • Ag Pals are incoming Davis College students who sign up to be part of the program. Ag Pals can complete the information form during their orientation session.
  • Mentors are current upper-class Davis College students who volunteer to be part of the program. Please read the additional information about mentor requirements on the information form page.

Overview
The Davis College Ag Pal Program is an optional program that incoming undergraduate students can sign up to participate in during their first year at Texas Tech University. The purpose of the program is to assist incoming students with their transition into Davis College and Texas Tech by introducing them to students who have been at Texas Tech and Davis College for at least one year.

Incoming students can sign up by completing the ag pal information sheet during their orientation session. The information sheets are used to get to know incoming students and to appropriately pair each pal with a mentor.

Pairings are done based on interests, majors, hometown or other common areas. Ag Pals can also request a person if they know a student who is already attending Texas Tech and majoring within Davis College. Ag Pals will receive information about their mentors in early August 2013. Ag Pal Mentors

Overview
Current Davis College students volunteer to be a Mentor and are paired with two to three incoming undergraduate students. Mentors will work in teams to get to know their Ag Pals and plan activities.

Ag Mentor Teams
Ag Mentor Teams were designed to encourage group activity. With two to three Mentors having four to six Ag Pals between them, this allows the new students to meet more people and interact through activities. If multiple mentor teams decided to work together this number of acquaintances doubles. On the Mentor Information Form, you can request to be on a team with a specific person and request any incoming students that you may already know. Teams are put together based on requests, majors, similar student organization involvement, etc. Mentor teams will be emailed information by the end of July with information about the mentor team and their ag pals.

Activities

  • Contact your Ag Pal prior to them moving to Lubbock/Texas Tech;
  • Meet your Ag Pal their first week in Lubbock/Texas Tech; help them move in the residence halls, take them to eat, a movie, or other activity;
  • Take your Ag Pals to Ag Fest during the first week of the fall semester; and
  • Plan activities throughout the semester to encourage your Ag Pals to get involved and meet new people. These activities have no regulations we just ask that the mentors plan activities responsibly and let the Student Success Center know of any issues that may arise.

Welcome Baskets
Mentors create Welcome Baskets for each of their Ag Pals. These baskets will be placed in their Ag Pal's residence hall room prior to them moving in for the fall semester. The purpose of the welcome baskets is to give each person some Texas Tech items, help them feel welcome and a part of a collegiate family. Welcome Baskets must be prepared and turned into the Student Success Center by mid-August.
