The John and Joan Baize Scholarship Endowment was established in 2021 by John and Joan Baize to help fund students enrolled in the Davis College of Agricultural Resources and Natural Resources with preference given to graduates of a high school in Gatesville, Texas and exhibiting outstanding academic achievement in high school and college.

John Baize is a native of Gatesville, Texas and is a 1971 graduate of Texas Tech University where he majored in Range Management. He received a Master of Science degree from Colorado State University in 1973. He joined the staff of the Agriculture Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1975 where he was the staff director for the Livestock and Grains Subcommittee. In 1978 John became a member of the staff of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative where he worked on the Tokyo Round of GATT Trade negotiations. In 1979 he became of the head of the Washington office of the American Soybean Association where he represented the U.S. soybean industry before the U.S. Government as well as worked in international trade disputes with several countries. In 1989 he established his own consulting firm focusing on agricultural and trade issues.

Joan McNeal Baize is a native Georgian and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism. She began her career while still in college – working her way through school by serving as a reporter. She has been a TV producer, magazine editor and most recently for the past 25 years the Vice President of the American Apparel Manufacturers Association and the President of its Foundation.

Joan met John in 1976 while both were traveling in China, and they have been traveling together ever since—this June celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary.

Joan and John live in Falls Church, VA with their two cats – Jubal T. Early and P.G.T. Beauregard, whose names will not be changed.
