Global careers take center stage at Tech's ag week
Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources kicks off its annual Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week starting, Monday, Oct. 15. The events are planned to promote the awareness of agriculture and natural resources as well as the activities within the college.
The theme of this year's event is "Growing Global Careers."
Throughout the week there will be several events and exhibits including the popular awareness program, Ag-In-The-Bag, which serves as an outreach to elementary age students. It will take place Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Texas Tech Livestock Arena.
"The purpose of this event is to educate these students on the importance of agriculture," said Colleen Price, president of the Student Agricultural Council. "Many of the kids, even being from Lubbock, have never seen a real cow before, and they do not realize that the cotton in the fields is what makes the T-shirts they are wearing."
Lubbock area fourth graders and their teachers are invited to attend the half-day program sponsored by CASNR, Cooperative Extension Services and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of animals, plants and water.
Participants will visit eight stations during the program including: cotton, corn, peanuts, wheat, food science, beef, water, and the Mobile Dairy Classroom. The event is free and lunch is provided. More than 1,300 students are expected to attend over the three-day period.
Separately, an exhibit highlighting distinguished alumni of the college and career opportunities will be featured in the Croslin room of the University Library from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
