Faculty Focus
Raychel Vasseur - Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics and Director of Foundations of Spanish (1st & 2nd year)
I am very pleased to be joining CMLL at Texas Tech as an Assistant Professor in Spanish
and the Director of Foundations of Spanish.
I completed my graduate studies at the University of Iowa (Go Hawks!) with a Ph.D.
in second language acquisition. My research interests, broadly defined, focus on the
development of speaking skills. Projects I am working on investigate the development
of speaking skills during study abroad, the development of intercultural competence
and oral proficiency, outcomes and program assessment, and how technology can assist
language learners in developing their second language oral proficiency.
I grew up on the beaches of New Jersey, near to where Bruce Springsteen got his start.
When I'm not working, you'll likely find me practicing or teaching yoga, spending
time with my fluffy, white Australian Shephard Great Pyrenees mix, Margo, cheering
on the Hawkeyes, or reading The Atlantic.
I am looking forward to joining the community that is CMLL and meeting students and
other faculty across campus.
Rossy Evelin Lima- Director, Spanish Heritage Language Program
Dr. Rossy Lima earned her BA and MA degree in Hispanic literatures and linguistics from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Houston. Her dissertation examined the morphological processes of lexical creations in the formal and informal register of heritage language speakers. Her academic research focuses in lexical creations, translation and interpretation and heritage language pedagogy. Dr. Lima is an award winning poet, whose career started in 2005 and, since then, has received several national and international recognitions, such as the International Latino Book Award (2014 and 2015), the Premio Internazionale di Poesia Altino, Italy, the Premio la Finestra Eterea, Milan, Italy. This year, Dr. Lima was named Poet of the year during the Poetry of the Americas Festival organized by City College University New York. Her entrepreneurial endeavors include founding the non-profit organization Latin American Foundation for the Arts, the publishing company Jade Publishing, the International Latin American Poetry Festival (Feipol), and the Sin Fronteras Book Festival.
As the director of the Heritage Language program at TTU, Dr. Lima has started the Translation and Interpretation Lab, in which graduate students prepare undergraduate students in the field of translation and interpretation, motivating them to use their heritage language as a resource. In the Spring 2019, Dr. Lima will be teaching a translation and interpretation course focused in literary translation and a graduate course on teaching methods in heritage language classes. Dr. Lima was invited by the Center for Language Instruction and Coordination at the University of Illinois to give a webinar on heritage language teaching practices, a workshop open to all educators who might be interested.
