Student Frequently Asked Questions
What will happen to my Labs?
- There are a variety of ways that labs will be handled, though most will include a synchronous/asynchronous video demonstration. Some of the WCOE Departments have been video recording lab experiments using graduate student. This may not have the same effect as a hands-on experience; however, we believe it will convey the necessary information. Also, some departments are developing virtual labs that will mimic the hands-on lab. These were to be used as trainers (like pilot flight trainers) prior to going into a lab, yet, they can be repurposed for situation like this.
How will this affect ABET accreditation of my program?
- This will not impact ABET accreditation per the ABET guidance at https://www.abet.org/accreditation/covid-19-update/
- "ABET understands the need for programs to temporarily modify program delivery methods in order to safeguard their communities during the current health crisis caused by COVID-19. It is not necessary to report any short term (current or summer semester) changes to program delivery or content to us. Should the changes or modifications to the program become permanent, please refer to the ABET Accreditation Policy and Procedure Manual (Section I.F.1.b.(2)) to formally notify us of any changes during the period of accreditation."
How will I be advised?
- The WCOE advisors have several methods for online advising:
- Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
- Skype for Business
- Strive.TTU.edu
- Please contact your advisor via email if you have questions. During this time, we ask for your patience in waiting for a response.
I would like to drop a course because of the COVID-19 pandemic but I'm afraid it will count against my state drop limit. Who should I contact?
- Students with questions about dropping or withdrawing because of the COVID-19 pandemic should discuss concerns with their academic advisors. Dropping a course and withdrawing from the university can carry significant financial and academic consequences.
- Per state statute, Texas Tech has the authority to extend the deadline to drop a course. That deadline has been extended to May 1, and students who drop a course because of issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic will not be penalized for doing so (i.e., the drop will not count against statutory student drop limits).
- The deadline to withdraw from the university as a result of the pandemic has been extended to May 1. Students considering a withdrawal should first consult with their academic advisors and then consult with Student Business Services and Financial Aid. Following such consultations, students considering withdrawal should express that interest to their academic deans' offices.
Where do I find the most current information from the Texas Tech Administration?

Faculty Frequently Asked Questions
Is there someone in the college that can help me figure out how to put my lectures online?
- In the coming weeks we are all going to venture into the unknown of offering our courses online, something most of us have zero experience with. It is important that all of us strive to do as much as we can to figure out for ourselves what works for us. The process of offering courses and exams online is something that we must each decide how to do for ourselves so that we are comfortable with the process when it really matters. The University has setup a webpage with all of the accumulated information available here: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/elearning/remote/.
What exam tools are available?
- Dr. Fedler in CECE just confirmed with the University that we will all be able to use the Proctorio exam proctoring service during these emergency times. The details for how to use this system are available here: https://www.depts.ttu.edu/elearning/blackboard/proctorio/index.php.
- Another option is the Respondus Lockdown Browser. The TTU eLearning page for Respondus is available here: https://www.depts.ttu.edu/elearning/blackboard/instructor/respondus/.
- A PDF with instructions on how to get started with Respondus is available here: https://www.depts.ttu.edu/elearning/blackboard/respondus_training.pdf.
Where can I find facts about the SARS-COV2, COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus?
- The CDC has assembled a page with information available here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.
- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created an FAQ for FEMA's management of nationwide response efforts available here: https://www.fema.gov/coronavirus/faq.
- Given the pervasiveness of rumors, FEMA has also created a rumor control page available here: https://www.fema.gov/coronavirus-rumor-control.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) has created a webpage available here: https://www.who.int/health-topics/coronavirus#tab=tab_1.
