Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering Strategic Plan
Education & Student Success
The Whitacre College of Engineering is deeply committed to education and student success,
with a focus on preparing engineers who are ready to excel in the workplace and beyond.
Key initiatives include developing rigorous academic programs that emphasize hands-on
learning, critical thinking, and leadership skills. The College is revamping the first-year
experience,
introducing courses that focus on AI and computational thinking, while also increasing
the involvement of departmental faculty in early student education. New programs and
minors, such as
Biological Systems, Robotics, and Aerospace Engineering, are set to launch between
2024 and 2027, ensuring that students are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and
skills that align
with the needs of the modern world.
The College also prioritizes student retention, aiming to graduate 80% of students
within four years and retain over 85% within engineering. Support systems such as
tutoring, mentoring,
and streamlined curriculum coordination between departments are essential to improving
student outcomes. Additionally, global experiences are a core component of the student
journey,
with initiatives in place to enhance the quality of faculty-led programs, encourage
immersive international opportunities, and offer credit for global internships. Facilities
are being modernized
to create an optimal learning environment, and interdisciplinary capstone projects
are being expanded to give students real-world, industry-focused experiences. Through
these efforts,
the College is dedicated to providing a world-class education that not only prepares
students for successful careers but also inspires them to be leaders and innovators
in their fields.
