Master of Science in Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers three options leading to the Master of Science in Mathematics. The requirements outlined below supplement the University and Graduate School policies published in the Graduate Catalog. Each student’s plan of study and advisory committee must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. Students are required to submit an official degree plan after completing their first semester and before beginning their second semester in the program.
The requirements listed here represent the minimum standards for the degree. Students should carefully consider which option best aligns with their academic preparation and professional goals. Coursework completed with a grade lower than a “C” may not be applied toward any graduate degree in mathematics or statistics. Additionally, all MATH 536x courses—except MATH 5362—may be counted toward the degree only with prior approval from the Graduate Advisor. Such approval must be obtained before the semester in which the course is taken.
The Master of Science in Mathematics (Thesis Option) requires a total of 30 semester hours, consisting of 24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of thesis credit (MATH 6000). Of the 24 coursework hours, at least 18 must be in mathematics or statistics and must include one approved sequence in a core area.
Core sequences are offered in the following areas:
- MATH 5326 & 5327 – Modern Algebra I & II
- MATH 5330 & 5331 – ODE I & II
- MATH 5332 & 5333 – PDE I & II
- MATH 5320 & 5321 – Complex Analysis I & II
- STAT 5328 & 5329 – Intermediate Mathematical Statistics I & II
- MATH 5322 & 5323 – Real Analysis I & II
- MATH 5324 & 5325 – Topology I & II
- MATH 5334 & 5335 – Numerical Analysis I & II
- STAT 5373 & 5374 – Applied Statistics (Design of Experiments & Linear Models)
A minor in an approved field outside mathematics may be included with advisor approval. Completion of a thesis and successful thesis defense are required for this degree option.
The Master of Science in Mathematics (Non-Thesis – Report Option) requires 36 semester hours, consisting of 33 hours of coursework and 3 hours of departmental report credit (MATH 6310). Of the 33 coursework hours, at least 24 must be in mathematics or statistics and must include two approved sequences selected from the core areas.

- MATH 5326 & 5327 – Modern Algebra I & II
- MATH 5330 & 5331 – ODE I & II
- MATH 5332 & 5333 – PDE I & II
- MATH 5320 & 5321 – Complex Analysis I & II
- STAT 5328 & 5329 – Intermediate Mathematical Statistics I & II
- MATH 5322 & 5323 – Real Analysis I & II
- MATH 5324 & 5325 – Topology I & II
- MATH 5334 & 5335 – Numerical Analysis I & II
- STAT 5373 & 5374 – Applied Statistics (Design of Experiments & Linear Models)
The Master of Science in Mathematics (Non-Thesis – Exam Option) requires 36 semester hours of graduate coursework and successful completion of two departmental Preliminary Examinations. A minor in an approved field outside mathematics may be included with advisor approval.
Of the 36 coursework hours, at least 24 must be in mathematics or statistics and must include two approved sequences selected from the core areas.
