Master's Degree inStatistics
Master of Science in Statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers three options leading to the Master of Science in Statistics. The requirements outlined below supplement the University and Graduate School policies published in the Graduate Catalog. Each students program of study and advisory committee must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. Students are required to submit an official degree plan after completing their first semester and before beginning their second semester in the program.
These requirements represent the minimum standards for the degree, and students should give careful consideration to the option that best aligns with their academic background and professional goals. Coursework completed with a grade lower than a “C” may not be applied toward any graduate degree in mathematics or statistics.
The following five courses are required of all students in the program:
- STAT 5328 – Intermediate Mathematical Statistics I
- STAT 5329 – Intermediate Mathematical Statistics II
- STAT 5371 – Regression Analysis
- STAT 5373 – Design of Experiments
- STAT 5374 – Theory of Linear Statistical Models
The following six courses may be taken as electives toward the degree:
- STAT 5326 – Biostatistics
- STAT 5372 – Nonparametric Statistical Inference
- STAT 5375 – Statistical Multivariate Analysis
- STAT 5378 – Stochastic Processes
- STAT 5379 – Time Series Analysis
- STAT 5386 – Statistical Computing and Simulation
Other graduate-level statistics courses may also be used to satisfy degree requirements, except for STAT 5302–5303 and STAT 5384–5385, which are intended for non-departmental students.
The Master of Science in Statistics (Thesis Option) requires 36 semester hours, consisting of 30 hours of coursework and 6 hours of thesis credit. A final comprehensive examination is not required.
Coursework for this option includes:
- All five required STAT courses listed above, plus five additional elective STAT courses from the approved list.
- With approval from the Statistics Graduate Advisor and the advisor in the secondary field, up to three hours outside statistics may be taken in place of one of the STAT elective courses.
- Six hours of STAT 6000 devoted to the masters thesis.
The Master of Science in Statistics (Report Option) requires 36 semester hours, consisting of 33 hours of coursework and 3 hours of credit for a departmental report. A final comprehensive examination is required.
Coursework requirements for this option include:
- All five required STAT courses listed above, plus six additional elective STAT courses from the approved list.
- With approval from the Statistics Graduate Advisor and the advisor in the secondary field, up to three hours outside statistics may be taken in place of one of the STAT elective courses.
- Three hours of STAT 6310 devoted to the masters report.
The Master of Science in Statistics (Exam Option) requires 36 semester hours of coursework and successful completion of two departmental Preliminary Examinations in statistics:
- Theory of Statistics Preliminary Exam (STAT 5328 & 5329 - Intermediate Mathematical Statistics I & II)
- Applied Statistics Preliminary Exam (STAT 5373 & 5374 - Design of Experiments & Theory of Linear Statistical Models)
A final comprehensive examination is also required.
Coursework requirements for this option include:
- All five required STAT courses listed above, plus six additional STAT elective courses from the approved list, and one additional MATH/STAT course from the department.
- With approval from the Statistics Graduate Advisor and the advisor in the secondary field, up to three hours outside statistics may be taken in place of one STAT elective course.
- With approval from the Statistics Graduate Advisor and the Mathematics Graduate Advisor, up to six hours of MATH courses may be taken in place of two STAT elective courses.
