Scholarship Opportunities

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for undergraduate students. Our department supports undergraduate success through numerous endowed scholarships and awards. We encourage all eligible students to apply and take advantage of these resources.

Departmental Undergraduate Scholarships

H. Earl and Countess Fore Archer Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics. H. Earl and Countess Fore Archer made substantial contributions toward establishing Texas Tech scholarships, including a dedicated scholarship for mathematics majors.

George L. Baldwin Undergraduate Mathematics Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics. George Baldwin was a former faculty member (1966–1988) who enjoyed teaching future mathematics educators and returning students working toward advanced degrees.

Chau-Yen and Andrew Ha Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support students majoring in mathematics and statistics.

Sherrie and Rick Hale Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics.

Emmett Hazlewood Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors. Emmett Hazlewood was a longtime faculty member (1939–1974) and department chair whose leadership helped advance the department’s early development.

E. Richard Heineman Freshman Mathematics Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for entering students majoring in mathematics. E. Richard Heineman was an early faculty member (1928–1973) known for high academic expectations and dedication to student potential.

Mildred and Lonnie Langston Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics.

Mark Luedecke Memorial Scholarship

Contributions provide support for students majoring in mathematics and statistics. Mark Luedecke was a department alum, a pioneer in using mathematics and statistics for advanced process control, and a mentor to young statisticians.

Robert A. Moreland Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors. Bob Moreland was a long-serving, well-known faculty member (1953–1998) and mentor who also sponsored a student fraternity.

Morrison, Broughton Memorial Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics.

Dub and Mozelle Rushing Mathematics Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics. “Dub” Rushing was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and strong ties to students.

Dr. Mara Neusel Academic Excellence Award

Contributions support underrepresented students majoring in mathematics, with emphasis on supporting women in undergraduate and graduate mathematics. Recipients must be actively engaged in research.

Weldon & Beverly Patterson Math Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support students majoring in mathematics and statistics.

Donal and Penny Schmidt Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support students majoring in mathematics and statistics.

Ram Lal Seekri Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support students majoring in mathematics and statistics.

Neal and Carrie Shaw Mathematics Undergraduate Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support undergraduate students majoring in mathematics and statistics.

Monty J. Strauss Honors Scholarship in Mathematics Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors. Monty J. Strauss is an emeritus faculty member, longtime administrator, and coauthor of a calculus textbook used by the department.

Monty J. Strauss Mathematics Scholarship Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors. Monty J. Strauss is an emeritus faculty member and active contributor to mathematics education at Texas Tech.

Tarwater Family Endowment

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors. Dalton Tarwater was a faculty member (1968–2001), former department chair, and editor of widely used freshman-level mathematics textbooks.

Magdalena Toda Endowed Scholarship Fund

Contributions support an annual scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students in mathematics. Dr. Toda, current Department Chair, is deeply involved in undergraduate curriculum and advocates strongly for underrepresented populations.

Alumni Association Undergraduate Scholarships

Ali Amir-Moez Research Award Endowment (310)

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics. Ali Amir-Moez was a former faculty member (1965–1988) who enjoyed both teaching and research. He established a fund to recognize undergraduate research projects and was known for creating intricate puzzles, including string puzzles.

Robert Trent Brown Endowment (355)

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics.

W.B. (Dub) Rushing Mathematics Endowment (610)

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics.

Paul Thompson Endowment (655)

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors with an expectation of teaching at the elementary level. Paul Thompson was a former faculty member (1963–1985) with a strong commitment to preparing future mathematics educators.

Ralph Underwood Endowment (670)

Contributions support scholarships for students majoring in mathematics. Ralph Underwood was a faculty member from the early 1930s through the mid-1960s and trained numerous graduate students during his long career.

Derald Walling Endowment (680)

Contributions support scholarships for mathematics majors intending to teach at the secondary level. Derald Walling was a former faculty member (1966–1992) dedicated to preparing future mathematics teachers.
