Scooter Safety

Ride Smart, Red Raiders

Slow down. The maximum speed is 10 mph on campus sidewalks and other traveled ways and 20 mph on campus streets. Reduce your speed further in crowded areas, near intersections or whenever conditions require it.

Yield to pedestrians. Pedestrians always have the right of way. Give them plenty of room when passing and be prepared to stop.

Stay alert. Keep your eyes on the path ahead and your phone put away. Watch for vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles and other scooters, particularly at intersections and crossings.

Ride solo. Never carry a passenger on a scooter designed for one rider. Additional passengers can make it more difficult to balance, steer and stop safely.

Wear a helmet. A properly fitted helmet can help reduce the risk of serious head injury in the event of a fall or collision.

Follow traffic rules. Obey posted signs, including stop signs, signals and dismount zones. Use designated bike lanes where required and avoid riding on walkways immediately in front of building entrances or in parking garages.

Ride sober. Never operate an electric scooter while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Park responsibly. Park scooters only in permitted locations. Keep sidewalks, building entrances, ramps and other accessible pathways clear.

Take a few seconds to check your scooter before each trip:

  • Make sure the brakes work properly.
  • Check the tires, handlebars and overall condition of the scooter.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and secure loose items.
  • Plan your route and allow enough time to reach your destination safely.

Remember: Never assume a driver or pedestrian sees you. Slow down, look both ways and make sure approaching drivers see you before crossing. Even when you have the right of way, never assume a driver has noticed you. When possible, make eye contact with drivers before proceeding.

All electric scooter operators are responsible for following Texas Tech's rules and regulations. Review the complete regulations for information about permitted routes, speed limits, parking and other requirements.
