The Department of Plant and Soil Science and the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute (FBRI) welcomed a new faculty member in January. Dr. Julia Shamshina is a Research Assistant Professor in renewable biopolymers and bioproducts. Her research interests lie in the development of biopolymers for industrial use and the eventual replacement of synthetic plastics.
Shamshina earned degrees from the D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia in Moscow, Russia and the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa. She has since held research and leadership roles in both industry and academia across North America.
