The 59th annual Soil Survey and Land Resource Workshop was held on Feb. 9-10, and a PSS student took home the top prize in the graduate student oral presentation competition. Billi Jean Petermann — a Ph.D. student under Lindsey Slaughter — earned first place with her presentation titled “Soil Microbial Response to Long-Term Management Practices in Cotton Systems of the Semi-Arid Texas Southern High Plains”.

The Soil Survey and Land Resource Workshop is an annual conference for Texas soil scientists to share updates on research and policy, discuss priorities, and communicate with relevant state and federal agencies. It is organized each year by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension and the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA NRCS) Texas state office, with cooperation from the Professional Soil Scientists Association of Texas (PSSAT).

The workshop, which is typically held in College Station, was hosted in a virtual format this year (2022).
