Research Assistant Professor of One Health

About Me

Josimar Dornelas-Moreira is a Research Assistant Professor of One Health Innovation at the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. He was born and raised in the small town of João Pinheiro, located in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He obtained his Pharmacy degree with a specialization in Clinical and Toxicological Analyses and worked as a pharmacist for 3 years before receiving his MS in Pharmacology from the University of São Paulo and Ph.D. in Clinical and Toxicological Analyses with an emphasis in Clinical Immunology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. He came to Texas in 2019 to work at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler as a Postdoctoral Research Associate Senior and in 2022, joined the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He then joined the School of Veterinary medicine as a faculty member in September of 2025.

Instruction

Josimar aims to identify specific pathways involving post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their effects on metabolism and immune function to develop novel therapies for managing and preventing inflammatory conditions.

Research

The research of Josimar employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining immunology, cell metabolism, and epigenetics to study how nutrition and environmental factors influence health outcomes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction. His research uses both whole-animal and cell-based methods to functionally analyze biological macromolecules like DNA, RNA, and proteins, including the regulatory impact of post-translational modifications. His methodology incorporates advanced genetic engineering techniques, such as the use of viral vectors, recombinant DNA technologies, and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to precisely modify an organism's genetic material.

Service

He has been a reviewer for several scientific journals including European Journal of Pharmacology, Frontiers in Microbiology, Life Sciences, and Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine.
