This area abounds in cultural and historical richness as a Roman city conquered during the Islamic conquest in 711 to gaining independence in the early 11th century.  The region was then ruled by Almoravids and Almohad and continuing through its incorporation to the Crown of Castile in 1248 to becoming the gateway to the Spanish Empire's trans-Atlantic trade in the 16th Century.  Continuing into the 17th century, the Baroque period coincided with the flowering culture of the city. Following came an economic and demographic decline which marked the eras from 17th to 19th centuries and the 20th century's Spanish Civil War.  Resilience and perseverance propelled this area into a modern urban center with its high-speed rail system, airport expansions, bridge construction and the revitalization of a dead area into Las Setas, the largest timber framed structure in the world.  Excursions include visits to beautiful cathedrals to Córdoba, Granada and Mérida.
