2023 Davis College Undergraduate Research Grant recipients announced

Twelve standout students have been tapped to receive a 2023 Undergraduate Research Grant. Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources leaders took a moment this week to recognize these talented participants.

“It is great to see students getting involved in research at the undergraduate level,” said Christy Bratcher, Davis College's Associate Dean for Research. “This is a wonderful opportunity to learn skills needed for graduate level work in the future.”

The funding for the undergraduate grants supported wages for research activities or for supplies to conduct research projects. After completing the project, the students submitted an abstract to a professional society meeting or to a symposium or research conference supported at Texas Tech.

The 2023 Undergraduate Research Grant recipients are:

  • Carla Britz is an agricultural economics major from Johannesburg, South Africa. Her project supervisor is Syed Badruddoza, an assistant professor within the Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics
  • Audrey Crawford is a sophomore natural resources management major from Lubbock, Texas. Her project supervisor is Clint Boal, a professor of wildlife biology within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Dakota Holden is a senior natural resources management major from Luling, Texas. His project supervisor is Blake Grisham, an associate professor of wildlife management within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Emerald King is a senior natural resources management major from Ogden, Arkansas. Her project supervisor is Kerry Griffis-Kyle, an associate professor within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Blake Mills is a sophomore agricultural education & communications major from Center Point, Texas. His project supervisor is Jason Headrick, an assistant professor within the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications
  • Shin Myat Naing is a junior agricultural & applied economics major from Singapore. Her project supervisor is Carlos Carpio, a professor within the Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics
  • Collin Norvell is a junior natural resources management major from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His project supervisor is Nathan Gill, an assistant professor within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Shelly Padalecki is a junior animal & food sciences major from Helotes, Texas. Her project supervisor is Nathan Hall, an associate professor of companion animal science within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences
  • Alex Pearson is a senior natural resources management major from Cypress, Texas. Her project supervisor is Aaron Norris, an assistant professor within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Gretchen Plocek is a junior plant and soil science major from Katy, Texas. Her project supervisor is Catherine Simpson, an assistant professor of sustainable/urban horticulture within the Department of Plant & Soil Science
  • Sarah Riney is a senior plant and soil science major from Rowlett, Texas. Her project supervisor is Cade Coldren, an assistant professor within the Department of Natural Resources Management
  • Joshua Winsauer is a junior plant and soil science major from Wichita Falls, Texas. His project supervisor is Scott Longing, an associate professor of entomology within the Department of Plant & Soil Science

Meanwhile, Bratcher took a moment to recognize the 2022 Undergraduate Research Grant class, which included:

  • Tyler Brimager, a natural resources management major from New Braunfels, Texas. His project director was Aaron Norris, an assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources Management.
  • Kylie Farmer, an agricultural communications major from Chowchilla, California. Her project supervisor was Laura Fischer, an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications.
  • Jackson Galvan, a plant and soil science major from Weslaco, Texas. Galvan's project director was Wenxuan Guo, an associate professor of crop ecophysiology and precision agriculture in the Department of Plant & Soil Science with a joint appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research.
  • Steven Iida, a natural resources management major from Spring, Texas. His project director was Caitlyn Cooper-Norris, an assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources Management.
  • Jessica Kennedy, a biochemistry major from Windhoek, Namibia. Her project supervisor was Gunvant Baliram Patil, an assistant professor with the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance.
  • Katherine Pearson, a plant and soil science major from Cypress, Texas. Her project supervisor was Scott Longing, an associate professor of entomology in the Department of Plant & Soil Science.
  • Sarah Peters, an animal and food science major from Shiner, Texas. Her project supervisor was Jhones Sarturi, an associate professor of beef cattle nutrition and metabolism in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences.
  • Alexandra Salinas, an agricultural leadership graduate (Dec. 2022) from Mission, Texas. Her project supervisor was Jason Headrick, an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications.
  • Rachel Self, a animal science major from Nacogdoches, Texas. Her project supervisor was Amy Petry, an assistant professor with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences.
  • Christian Stephens, a graduating plant and soil science major (May 2023) from Karnack, Texas. His project director was Rosalyn Shim, an assistant professor of plant breeding and genetics in the Department of Plant & Soil Science.
  • Alexandra Tegeler, a veterinary science major from Huntsville, Texas. Her project director was Clarissa Strieder-Barboza, an assistant professor with the Department of Veterinary Sciences.
