Equestrian Team Successful at Post Season Championships
The Texas Tech Equestrian Team has added championship titles to their ever-growing list of successes.
On March 1, the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 7, Region 2 Hunt Seat Regional Championships were held at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.
Texas Tech had two individual qualifiers. Lindsey Mortimer, a junior General Studies major from Austin, Texas, won the Intermediate Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat and was the Reserve Champion in Intermediate Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences. Teammate, Chelsea Hosmer, a sophomore Marketing major from Tucson, Arizona was the Reserve Champion in the Novice Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat and placed fourth in the Novice Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences.
The Champion and Reserve Champion in each class will compete in the IHSA Hunt Seat Zone 7 Championship in Cheyenne, Wyo., hosted by Laramie County Community College on April 5.
The IHSA Zone 7, Region 2 Western Regional Championships were held on March 8 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center. The TTU Western team finished the show season as Reserve Champion Team for Zone 7, Region 2.
The team had eight individuals qualify for the Regional Championship.
Alicia Daugherty, a junior Agricultural Communications major from Alpine, Texas, won Championship honors in both the Open Reining and the Open Western Horsemanship.
Chelsea Campbell, a freshman Agricultural Communications major from Hereford, Texas, was the Advanced Western Horsemanship Champion, and Amanda Cage, a senior Animal Science major from Ponder, Texas placed third.
Kelsey Lieurance, a freshman Animal Science major from El Paso, Texas, was the Novice Western Horsemanship Champion, and teammate Jessica Jarvis, a sophomore Animal Science major from Spearman, Texas, earned the Reserve Championship.
Stacy Jobe, a sophomore Biology major from Columbus, Texas was the Intermediate Western Horsemanship Champion, and Cristina Talcott, a junior Landscape Architecture major from New Braunfels, Texas earned the Reserve Championship.
Cheryl Hensley, a senior Animal Science major from Lubbock captured the Beginner Western Horsemanship Reserve Championship.
The Champion and Reserve Champion in each division will advance to the IHSA Western National Semi-Final Championship, hosted by West Texas A&M University in Canyon March 21-22.
The Equestrian Team is coached by Robin Morris, a graduate student in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences.
Riders in their respective disciplines will advance to the National Championship show if they qualify at their respective Zone Championship show. The IHSA National Championship show will be held at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. April 23-26.
