First Year FAQ

Do I need high school chemistry to enroll in freshman chemistry?

Although high school chemistry is not formally required, it is assumed that students enrolling in CHEM 1307 have completed a high school level chemistry course.

If you are planning to take CHEM 1307 without any high school chemistry, it is highly recommended that you first take CHEM 1301 (Introductory Chemistry) to improve your chances of success in 1307.

CHEM 1305 and 1306 do not require high school chemistry.

What if I have a weak background in chemistry?

CHEM 1301 (Introductory Chemistry) is a preparatory course designed for students who have minimal chemistry knowledge and are planning to enroll in Principles of General Chemistry (1307) in the future. Successful completion of CHEM 1301 has been shown to improve CHEM 1307 outcomes.

I am trying to register for CHEM 1307, but I keep receiving error messages. Why?

There are a few reasons why you may receive an error message during the registration process:

  • Have you taken the Chemistry Placement Exam? This is required for ALL students wishing to enroll in CHEM 1307.
  • Are you trying to register for section 001? This section is restricted to chemistry, or biochemistry majors, and those in the chemical engineering program.

What is the CPE and where can I find it?

The CPE (Chemistry Placement Exam) is a 35 multiple choice exam designed to assess whether a student has an appropriate level of preparation in chemistry and mathematics to proceed to CHEM 1307. All students intending to take CHEM 1301 and 1307 must complete the CPE. The CPE and additional information can be foundhere. Students wishing to enroll in CHEM 1305 and/or 1306 do not require this exam.

How do I obtain AP credit or transfer credit for my chemistry courses?

In order to receive transfer credit, students must first submit official copies of their final transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities to the Transfer Evaluation Office . The Transfer Evaluation Office determines acceptable transfer credit in consultation with our advisors and faculty. We strongly encourage students to meet with their academic advisor to discuss course transferability.

AP credit for our chemistry courses can be earned through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), a credit-by-examination program that allows students to earn college credits. For minimum score requirements and information on courses for which credit can be earned, please click here.

Be aware that certain post-undergraduate professional degree programs may not honor AP credits. We recommend confirming your specific requirements with your academic advisor.

Is it ok to take my CHEM lecture and lab in different semesters?

Your chemistry lecture courses are pre-requisites or co-requisites for the corresponding lab courses. The lecture courses are commonly taken concurrently with the lab, however, students do have the option of completing the lecture course prior to taking the laboratory course. If students opt to complete the lecture course prior to the lab, a minimum grade of C- is required.

If I drop my lecture, can I keep my lab?

If you are enrolled in the lecture and corresponding lab concurrently, and choose to drop the lecture class, the laboratory course must also be dropped.

Why do I have evening class times listed for my chemistry courses?

These times correspond to your exams. Your instructor will provide you with more detailed information about your exam schedule.

Where can I find information about Pre-Professional Health Careers?

Your advisor and the Pre-Professional Health Career Office can provide you with information related to health careers and the pre-professional programs.
