MA Degree Requirements

The degree requires 36 hours of coursework consisting partly of the core seminars required of all students pursuing the M.A. in English and partly of requirements specific to the Creative Writing concentration. The core seminars include courses in research and/or critical methods, British and American literature, and professional development issues. The Creative Writing requirements include 12 hours of creative writing workshops in fiction, poetry, and/or nonfiction, according to the student's interests. In the final semester of study, the student completes the requirements for the degree by assembling a portfolio of creative work produced in workshop or, in exceptional cases, a creative thesis. Students must also acquire or demonstrate reading knowledge of one foreign language.
