Use of library resources for text and data mining and AI

The TTU Libraries contracts with vendors and publishers to provide our authorized users with licensed access to electronic resources such as databases, ejournals, ebooks, streaming videos, and streaming music. Most of our license agreements prohibit systematic/bulk downloading and the use of robots, spiders, or other programs to automate full text downloading. Text and Data Mining (TDM) may be allowed for research purposes only and with prior approval of the vendor or publisher. In most cases using licensed content to train AI models is a violation of our contract agreements.

If you are planning a text and data mining project, please send an email to libraries.ERLIBSYS@ttu.edu and include a detailed description of your project and the resources you’re interested in using. We may be able to offer help depending on your project’s parameters and the vendor’s terms of use.

Unless approved by the vendor or publisher, these activities are a breach of the terms of our license agreements and can result in suspension of access or permanent loss of access to electronic resources for the entire Texas Tech University community.
