Clinton J. Roof, DVM MS MPH

About Me

Clinton J. Roof is an Assistant Professor of Dairy Medicine and Surgery and Director of Clinical Veterinary Affairs at Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. Raised in southern New Mexico, he developed an early passion for livestock production, rural communities, and food animal medicine that continues to shape his professional career today.

He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Master of Science in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, and Master of Public Health from Kansas State University. His graduate research focused on bovine respiratory disease, bacterial pathogen quantification, zoonotic and infectious diseases, occupational biosafety, and Rift Valley fever. He also participated in small animal internal medicine research involving chronic kidney disease in canine and feline patients.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, he remains involved in private practice. He is a partner of Bovine Veterinary Services, P.C., serving dairy and beef producers throughout southeastern New Mexico, West Texas, and western Oklahoma. He is also the owner of Rafter R Veterinary Services, LLC, a mobile veterinary practice providing large animal, equine, small ruminant, and limited small animal services.

At Texas Tech University, Dr. Roof teaches across the veterinary curriculum and oversees clinical training partnerships throughout the distributed clinical year program. His passion lies in preparing practice-ready veterinarians through hands-on clinical training, critical thinking, and professional development. His work bridges academia and private practice, ensuring students develop practical skills that translate directly to rural and mixed-animal veterinary medicine.

Instruction

His instructional interests focus on developing practice-ready veterinarians through experiential learning and clinical reasoning. Areas of emphasis include food animal medicine and surgery, dairy production medicine, field surgery, reproductive management, herd health, necropsy, emergency response, professional skills development, and clinical decision-making for general practitioners. He is particularly interested in helping students transition from the classroom to clinical practice through realistic, hands-on training experiences.

Research

Dr. Roof's research interests include bovine respiratory disease, antimicrobial stewardship, food animal production medicine, zoonotic and infectious diseases, veterinary education, cattle and equine reproduction, and practical clinical applications that improve animal health, welfare, and producer outcomes. His recent work has expanded into veterinary educational research, pain management, food animal therapeutics, and field-based clinical training models.

Service

Dr. Roof is committed to serving the livestock industry and rural communities through education, mentorship, and outreach. He actively supports youth involved in agriculture through 4-H and FFA programs and regularly participates in livestock educational events, judging activities, and producer training programs. He is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, Academy of Veterinary Consultants, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association, and Texas Equine Veterinary Association. Through both academia and private practice, he remains dedicated to advancing rural veterinary medicine, supporting livestock producers, and mentoring the next generation of veterinarians.
