Flora Mayfield and Ross Ayers Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Flora Mayfield and Ross Ayers Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established by the estate of Burton R. Ayers in 2003. Major General Ross Ayers was one of seven children born to G. M. and Linda Ayers. He began his military career in 1931 by enlisting in Service Battery, 131st Field Artillery Battalion, and 36th Infantry Division of the Texas National Guard. Commissioned a 2d Lieutenant, Artillery in 1939. Mobilized with the 36th Division in 1943, served in the Europe Theater. Awards: Silver Star (for landing the first Artillery Piece on the beach head at Salerno, Italy). The Scholarship is awarded to students in the Departments of Plant and Soil Science, Landscape Architecture, or Natural Resources Management. The students must have completed at least 12 semester credit hours. Preferences are given to students who intend to teach. Scholarships are available in the area of biology, environmental sciences and farm ecology. Earnings are to be split equally between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
