Urs Peter "Upe" Flueckiger

Swiss-American Urs Peter "Upe" Flueckiger is a Full Professor and currently serves as the Dean at the Huckabee College of Architecture, Texas Tech University. He was born in Herzogenbuchsee, Switzerland and holds a Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. His design and research interests include economical ecological housing, minimalism in architecture, design build, and modernism in the 20th century to the present.
Prior to 1998 he worked for several architectural firms including the office of Mario Botta in Lugano, Switzerland, and the office of David Rockwell (Rockwellgroup) in New York City. In 1998 he joined the faculty of the Huckabee College, where he has received numerous teaching, research, and design awards for his work. His design work has been published in The New York Times and Texas Architect magazine among many other books, journals, and magazines.
Upe completed the Sustainable Cabin with his students in 2010: a collaborative prefabricated design build project. In his 2016 book How Much House? Thoreau, Le Corbusier, and the Sustainable Cabin (Birkhäuser) Upe wrote about the Sustainable Cabins project and its inspirations. The book was published and translated in four languages; the last edition was in Spanish and was produced in 2019. (Gustavo Gili). Upe is also the author of Donald Judd: Architecture in Marfa, Texas (Birkhäuser 2007), in 2021 he published a second and expanded edition.
In 2004, Upe and artist Carol Fitzgerald Flueckiger designed and built their current house and studio in Lubbock, Texas, where he continues his architectural practice today. When not thinking architecture or playing with his family, Upe loves riding his motorcycle across the High Plains of West Texas.
