Lauren Joseph Phillips

Lauren received his M. Arch from Rice University. His research and design work focuses on the changing landscapes of Texas and the American Southwest, and the relationship of our built environment to the land it occupies. A lifelong resident of Texas and New Mexico, he was awarded a travelling fellowship to study vernacular masonry in the Trans-Pecos and Abiquiu regions in 2019. His master's thesis considered modes of interurban development in the Texas Triangle, as well as the economic and political pressures driving low-density sprawl in rural Texas, and outlined a proposal for coordinated landscape preservation in Caldwell County.
In Houston, Lauren worked for Carlos Jiménez Studio. While at Rice, he volunteered with the Construct program (formerly Rice Building Workshop), RECESS Education Outreach, and was a member of NOMAS and Rice School of Architecture's Anti-Racism Collective. He is a member of the Texas Land Trust Council.
Lauren served as co-editor-in-chief of Rice Architecture's student-run PLAT Journal in 2019-2020, with PLAT 9.0 Commit receiving the Center for Architecture's Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals and a grant from the Graham Foundation. His writing has been published in the New York Review of Architecture's Skyline, Rice Design Alliance's Cite Digital, Azure magazine, and in the Fort Worth Weekly, where he was a regular contributor on art and architecture from 2014-2018. He is a founding member of Architecture Writing Workshop and has taught immersive courses on architecture to high school students through the summer programs of Rice Architecture and Duke University.
Lauren holds a B.A. with a Paralegal Studies concentration from Texas Wesleyan University and spent eight years working with various aspects municipal law, including easements, condemnations, property tax, ordinances, and special districts. His experience in the legal field helped to shape an interest in the relationship of architecture and the built environment to public policy and civic institutions.
Lauren grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Fort Worth, Texas.
