Shalia H. Cowan, M.A.
Shalia H. Cowan is an adjunct on-line instructor in the Special Education Department, Texas Tech University. She lives in Dripping Springs, Texas and teaches one on-line course through Blackboard. Cowan's special focus is deaf education with an emphasis on language and literacy. She worked at the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Commission for the Deaf, the Texas School for the Deaf and several school districts. She currently serves on the Governing Board of the Texas School for the Deaf.
Cowan's research efforts include a study of code-switching in the sign language used by deaf students. She also conducted a longitudinal qualitative case study of a deaf student reading and writing. Her unpublished doctoral dissertation focused on a deaf adolescent learning to read and understand the drivers' handbook, which included practicing driving and getting his driver's license.
