Position Alignment Overview

To help you navigate the new staff compensation structure, we’ve outlined a series of steps designed to guide you through the components of the program.

As you work through the steps, please remember that the job classification framework is a standardized way to organize employee positions relative to the work performed and not necessarily tied to the position title or reporting structure.

Step 1: Position Alignment Overview

In this step, gather the relevant information about your position to include:

  • Primary purpose of the position
  • Core duties and responsibilities
  • Required knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Decision-making authority
  • Supervision received and given
  • Impact on the organization

This information will be important as you work through the next steps on this site.

Step 2: Job Families

In this step, you will use determine the best Job Family and Subfamily to categorize the work by job function.

Step 3: Career Stream

Using the information provided, you will determine the appropriate Career Stream and Complexity Level based on the work being performed.

Step 4: Position Title Glossary

The position title glossary serves as a catalog of available job titles and provides standardized information for each title such as position overviews and required qualifications.  There are four different glossaries available: Staff, Faculty, Athletics, and Student Employee.

Step 5: Position Description

Using the information from the previous steps, you will be ready to draft the position description.

Step 6: Review and Validate

In this step, you will work with HR Compensation and Operations to review your request for accuracy within the job framework, ensure alignment with other similar roles to support consistency within the University, and determine salary level and pay using the market strategy elements and pay positioning guidelines.
