Top CASNR students shine in Gamma Sigma Delta honors spotlight
Texas Tech's chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture, recognized four top graduate students at its May awards recognition and new member initiation ceremony at the university's student union building.
"Our main purpose is to recognize academic excellence and service to agriculture," said Phillip Johnson, a professor in Tech's agricultural and applied economics department. "It's always exciting when departments nominate deserving students and recognize their accomplishments."
The honor society's outstanding graduate students, nominated by faculty within their
respective departments, included:
"Bridget Guerrero, Agriculture and Applied Economics
"Steven Oswalt, Plant and Soil Science
"Ali Reza, Natural Resource Management
"Argenis Rodas, Animal and Food Sciences
In addition to his departmental nod, Rodas was named the society's outstanding CASNR graduate student, Johnson said. Separately, two new faculty members, Enusha Karunasena from the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and Shaikh Rahman from the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, along with 15 graduate students, and 21 undergraduates were welcomed into the organization.
Among the new members inducted into Gamma Sigma Delta were graduate students Joseph Barbour; Brent Brown; Shannon Dickey; Caren Fullerton; Alexis Garza; Hallie Ladd; Laura Navarette; Michael Shiroya; Jason Sneed; Cassidy Sooter; Dipak Subedi; Rebecca Torres; Sarah Wulff; Bin Xu; and Shiliang Zhao.
Undergraduates students were Matthew Bruton; Cooper Cogdell; Mylea Coston; Caleb Crosswhite; Jessica Denis; Jordan Dickens; Kristen Dunn; Victoria Gartman; Leslie Hughes; Joanna Lehrmann; Brandon Martin; Joshua McCann; Danielle McGuire; Alaine Nelson; Ben Otahal; Britton Scott; Stephen Sheppard; Kaitlyn Smith; Samantha Stephenson; Emily Wolter; and Loni Woolley.
The society also bestowed its '2010 Outstanding Service to Agriculture Award' to David Wester, a professor in the Department of Natural Resources Management. Finally, Gamma Sigma Delta officials recognized the organization's leadership slate. Craig Bednarz of the Department of Plant and Soil Science serves as president, Christine Alvarado of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences is vice president and Johnson is the society's secretary/treasurer.
Founded in 1917, Gamma Sigma Delta is an honorary organization dedicated to the advancement of agriculture, the maintenance and improvement of relations between the agricultural sciences and industry, and the recognition of agriculture's responsibility to society as a whole. Additionally, the society encourages and recognizes academic excellence and worthy achievement in all branches of agriculture and related sciences.
