Texas Tech rodeo teams shine at Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo
Texas Tech's rodeo teams kicked off their fall season with a strong showing over the weekend at the Eastern New Mexico University 'College Daze Rodeo' at the Lewis Cooper Arena in Portales, NM. Both Tech men's and women's teams took second place at this the first Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event of the season.
ENMU's College Daze Rodeo, started in 1963, is a three-day event drawing several hundred participants who compete in steer wrestling, team roping, goat tying, breakaway and roughstock events. This year the annual event drew 16 universities and colleges from across the Southwest.
For the Tech women's team, Dani McGuire, a senior agricultural economics major from Gardendale, won second overall in the breakaway calf roping after winning first in the finals. Taylor Langdon, a sophomore animal and food sciences major from Aubrey, placed third in go round one, and third in the finals to win second overall in barrel racing.
Teammate Kirsten Stubbs, a sophomore agriculture business major from Eldorado, placed third in the first go round of breakaway calf roping and finished seventh overall. Teal Hampton, a senior human studies major from Ft. Myers, Fla., qualified for the top ten finals, and ended seventh overall in barrel racing.
Separately, Bailey Guthrie, a sophomore animal science major Rigby, Idaho, took first place in the goat tying finals. The national reserve champion (goat tying) also won first place overall in the rodeo's goat tying championship.
Meanwhile, in the men's competition, Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, finished first in go round one. The defending southwest regional champion bareback bronc rider then tied for third in the finals, and finished second overall in bareback riding.
Teammates Sterling Smith of Post and Adam Sawyer of Bassett, Neb., took third overall in the team roping, after winning third in the finals. Clay Creasy, a senior animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, placed third in go round one, and finished fourth overall.
Craig Leonard, a senior animal and food sciences major from Sonora, finished fourth in the finals, and fifth overall in calf roping. Cody Owens of McAllen and Brody Self of Stephenville tied for second in go round one, and finished seventh overall in team roping.
Tech's rodeo teams now travel to Sul Ross State University next week for the teams' second outing. Sul Ross is a regional university located at Alpine in Texas' Trans-Pecos region.
