Really Kickin': Texas Tech rodeo team wraps up fall season with hometown flair
Tough, championship saddle bronc riding helped lead Texas Tech's rodeo teams to a strong season finish this weekend at the Texas Tech Rodeo in Lubbock. Held at the Equestrian Center indoor arena, the meeting was the Red Raiders fifth and final Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event of the fall season.
Once the judges had tallied the points, Texas Tech's women's rodeo team rode to a second place finish in the championship race with 14 other NIRA college and universities in the region. In the men's competition, the team members ended the season in fourth place.
During the Hub City event, saddle bronc rider Clay Creasy, an animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, placed second in go round one and first in the finals. That win put the senior in the championship spot, taking home a trophy belt buckle
In the bareback riding competition, Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, placed in second in go round one, second in the finals, and second overall. Tech's Troy Parish and Blake Parish of Plains took sixth in go round one and sixth overall in the team roping. Meanwhile, Clay Creasy and Ft. Stockton's Levin Porter took seventh in go round one and seventh overall in team roping.
In the goat tying competition, Bailey Guthrie, a junior animal science major , took first place in go round one out of 85 contestants with the fastest time of the week at 7.6 seconds. The Rigby, Idaho, native won first in the finals with a time of 8.0 seconds to seal the championship and take away another trophy belt buckle.
In other women's competition action, Haley Nelson of Channing placed second in go round one out of 135 barrel racers. She then took fifth in the finals and third overall. Meanwhile, in the goat tying event Kallie Lamb, a senior animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, placed sixth in the finals and sixth overall.
Texas Tech's rodeo teams are scheduled to compete in five rodeos during the spring semester. Their goal is to win a regional championship which will qualify them for the College National Finals Rodeo next summer. The top two teams and top three individuals in the region automatically advance to nationals in Casper, Wyoming.
