Texas Tech takes top spot at Eastern National Meat Judging Contest
Texas Tech garnered three of the top-ten individual spots on its way to taking first place honors Saturday (Oct. 2) at the Eastern National Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Wyalusing, Pa. Tech's meat judging teams have a strong winning streak rolling now, taking 15 of the past 16 national meat judging competitions.
This time, though, it was close. At the end of the Pennsylvania competition Texas Tech was tied with Colorado State for the top spot with mirrored scores of 3,987 points. The tie was broken using the event's reasons score, a category that Tech won by 27 points.
"The team has really committed themselves to reasons "" that's what pulled them through at this contest," said Mark Miller, the meat judging team coach and Tech's San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science.
Meanwhile, Tech also won placings and pork judging divisions, in addition to finishing second in the beef division, fourth in the beef grading division and fifth in the lamb/veal division. Twelve universities from across the nation competed in the event.
Among the other top finishers were Colorado State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Nebraska and the University of Illinois. Cargill Regional Beef hosted the event.
In terms of individual achievements, Loni Woolley, a Tech junior from Grandview, was second overall. Trevor White, a junior from New Home, ranked fifth and Markus Miller, a junior from Abernathy, took tenth place honors.

Saturday's event was the fourth of seven contests for the team. Next on the schedule is the American Royal on Oct. 17 in Omaha, Neb.
