Recycling Picks Up; CASNR students lead local grassroots environmental effort
A group of environmentally-oriented Texas Tech students are launching a new way for Lubbock residents to go green, support natural resource programs and cut down on their own labor load.
"We'll pick up your recyclables for you," said Michael Panasci, president of Tech's Association of Natural Resource Scientists "That means no more sorting or transporting to the recycling center. We'll do that for you."
There's a cost, though. Among the three pick-up options are one collection for $25 a month; one collection every two months for $25; and for the more abundant recyclers there's two monthly collections for $35 a month. Among the recycled material selected for pick-up are tin cans, aluminum cans, clear or colored glass, alkaline batteries, clean or broken cardboard, plastic No. 1 and plastic No. 2, he said.
Panasci pointed out that the program's proceeds will support professional development of student members, including travel funds and registration fees for scientific meetings, as well as payment for guest speakers and leveraging university funds.
The outreach effort is being led by Tech's Association of Natural Resource Scientists and Society for Conservation Biology. The natural resource group's faculty advisor is Philip Gipson, chairman of Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management.
