Perl's Semester Page

For 50 years Robert Perl has been interested in Design Methods—the HOW-TO of design. He began studying design methods as a B. Arch undergraduate student at the University of Cincinnati, then as a beginning practitioner at Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill Chicago, I. M. Pei's office in New York, and MacDonald Architects in San Francisco.

He continued his efforts as a student at the Architectural Association in London, and at the University of California Berkeley where he earned his post-professional Masters degree. Perl joined the Architecture Faculty at Texas Tech University in 1979. Design Methods has been part of every course he has taught.

Since the 1973 Energy Crisis, Perl has been involved with energy conservation/climate-responsive design/sustainability. He taught Architectural Programming to hundreds of undergraduate students. For 20 years, he taught Research Methods to all first-semester Architecture graduate students.

He is in the process of digitizing highlights of his collection of 20,000 analog slides and posting highly visible web versions of some of his early publications. He is a licensed Architect in Texas, a NCARB Certificate holder, an AIA member, and a LEED Accredited Professional. He was Graduate Advisor during formative years of the M. Arch Program. He has served on University committees including the Graduate Council, Faculty Grievance Panel, and Dean Search. He is currently serving his third term as a CoA Senator.
