Sim Hinman Wan, Ph.D

Sim Hinman Wan is a historian of built environments and spatial representations. His research addresses early modern globalization, transculturality, and urbanization, with focus on Southeast Asias port cities. Dr Wans current book project is titled Intertwined Genealogies: Dutch, Chinese, and Colonial Indonesian Architecture of Philanthropy, 1640–1740. For this work, he has received Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awards from the Social Science Research Council and the Council on Library and Information Resources that support international–interdisciplinary scholarship. With a professional background in architectural design and sustainable building science, Dr Wan is broadly interested in the humanistic study of architecture for advancing the critical practices of historic preservation, heritage education, and community planning. He has held visiting positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Hong Kong. At Texas Tech, Dr Wan teaches courses on the global history of architecture, ecocritical theory, and modern Asia-Pacific.
