Summary of Research and Creative Practice Activities
The Architecture Research and Design Center (ARDC) facilitates and coordinates research
and design activities within the Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA). The Center
acts as an overarching entity to represent all research projects and individuals across
varied dimensions of architectural research, and across multiple campuses. The ARDC
is led by the Associate Dean for Research of the HCOA.
The scope of research themes, methodologies and impactful outputs evident within the
ARDC reflects the diverse skills and specializations within architectural research
at TTU. Projects range from humanities and social science-based work to computation
and digital design and fabrication, urban design and sustainability, fundamental and
applied materials investigations, design pedagogy, community engagement and design-builds
enabling real world testing of architectural designs. Projects are frequently characterized
by multidisciplinary collaborations, with faculty working together within the college,
across campuses, and partnering with others across the university and externally.
Collaborations include faculty at all ranks and levels of experience, as well as research
students, indicating a healthy research pipeline and culture.
In the calendar year 2025, HCOA faculty published a range of peer reviewed scholarly
works, including multiple edited books; numerous book chapters, fifteen peer-reviewed
journal articles, and dozens of conference proceedings, presentations and discussant
contributions internationally and nationally. The reputation of faculty is evidenced
by fifteen invited lectures in national and international venues. Faculty exhibited
their creative work in international and national venues, including one built work
in Spain. Faculty have organized local and binational symposia and workshops. Two
provisional patents were also lodged this year. Full details of these diverse research
related activities are presented in the following pages.
Faculty won 12 external grants in 2025, totaling $231,420 in value. This research
expenditure is impressive not only for its value in a competitive funding context,
but also for the range of funders and faculty involved in these successful initiatives.
These grants support publications, design-build work combining research and pedagogy
and community benefits, graduate student positions, and international fieldwork. Funding
derives from various sources, especially philanthropic organizations and industry,
which illustrates faculty are not reliant on any single funding source; for example,
ongoing philanthropic funding for Land Arts of the American West continues to provide
essential support for scholarships and operational costs in this highly specialized
program. Importantly, numerous faculty have been actively seeking grants large and
small, with over $16.5 million dollars of grant submissions made in this year, illustrating
the ambition and trajectory of the ARDC.
Work-in-progress in 2025 include sustained activities which will result in further
outputs in the coming year: Faculty reported working on book proposals, contracted
books, peer reviewed book chapters in press, and pending grant application decisions.
Two significant grants have been ongoing throughout 2024–2025 and will continue into
2026 (ReDDDoT Phase 1: $299,946; "Ultraviole(n)t Exposures," $450,000). In short,
this report is a reflection of the research completed in 2025, and there is more dissemination
and impact to come.
