Guillermo Ortega is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Texas Tech University. He earned his PhD in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Houston and holds an MEd in Higher Education and BA in History from the University of California, Riverside. His research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to examine opportunities and outcomes for undeserved college students. Specifically, he examines how colleges/universities and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are reproducing systemic inequalities that influence academic and athletic opportunities for Latina/o/e/x students. Dr. Ortega serves as a policy fellow at the Center for Athletes’ Rights and Equity (CARE), a faculty affiliate for Project Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success (MALES), and a research fellow for the Center for Higher Education Linguistics and Translation (CHELT). He has also been awarded AERA’s Early Career Award in Sports and Education and was named a Faculty Fellow for the American Association of Hispanics of Higher Education (AAHHE). His work has been funded by The Joyce Foundation, State Farm, the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE), among others.
