Pig Roast 2020

One of the largest and oldest traditions on campus, aside from a sporting event, the annual Pig Roast is a celebration at which we honor teams and individuals who have distinguished themselves, the College, and the University over the past year. Scholarship donors and recipients, as well as outstanding leaders in the fields of agriculture and natural resources are recognized. The event provides an opportunity to say, Thank You, to the individuals and companies who have assisted in the activities of Davis College.

The Pig Roast has long been a celebration of intercollegiate competitive team successes, and the 2019-2020 academic year marked another one of continued championship for our students.

Among the highlights, the Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team earned the title of National Champions at the 72nd Reciprocal Meat Conference. Two teams from Texas Tech went head to head in the final round of competition after eliminating 27 teams from other universities. This is the ninth time Texas Tech has won the competition, previously capturing the title in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The Meat Judging Team capped the 2019 competitive season by capturing the program's 14th national championship at the American Meat Science Association International Meat Judging Contest. They took first place in six of the eight categories and finished with the top three overall individual performances and four in the top 10. The team won its first crown in 1989 and has won a national championship every 10 years since that first one, claiming crowns in 1999, 2009 and now 2019. A Texas Tech competitor has now captured the individual national crown for five straight years, and 2019 marked the third time in five years Texas Tech has had the top two individual finishers.

Separately, led by the top three individual finishes, the team earned its first victory of the 2020 judging season with its 11th consecutive win at the American Meat Science Association Southwestern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest. It is the longest winning streak in the contest's history.

Also, the Ranch Horse Team won both the Stock Horse of Texas Collegiate World Championship and the SHTX Collegiate Reserve Championship at the 2019 Stock Horse of Texas Collegiate World Championships. In the past five years, the team was also 2017 SHTX World Champions, 2016 National Champions, 2015 Reserve National Champions, and 2014 National Champions.

The Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources recognizes scholastic capability as well as qualities of leadership, citizenship, and character. Davis College maintains one of the largest scholarship programs among the colleges at Texas Tech. Nearly half of Davis College students receive a scholarship with a total for student funding reaching more than $4 million annually. Scholarship awards are based on academic interest and achievement, financial need, and community involvement.

Davis College students welcome the opportunity to thank their scholarship donors each year. They realize they would not be able to attend college or engage in internships, leadership programs, team competitions, or study abroad if not for the generosity of scholarship and program supporters.
