Becoming a Member
The Advisory Council is a community of professionals, alumni, and friends of Texas Tech University who share one common goal: to advance the mission of the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business by supporting the recruitment, education, and placement of our students.
Council members serve as ambassadors, mentors, and advocates — helping ensure Rawls College continues to deliver world-class education and meaningful opportunities for the next generation of business leaders.
The mission of the Rawls College of Business Advisory Council is to support the successful recruitment, education, and placement of students through professional and financial assistance. Members serve as ambassadors in their area of influence and play an integral role in ensuring Rawls College continues to offer high-impact educational experiences by working closely with the Dean, faculty, alumni and current students.
Members work alongside the Dean, faculty, alumni, and current students to provide advice, connections, and resources that directly impact student success. From curriculum input and mentorship to recruiting and fundraising, every Council member plays a key role in helping Rawls College thrive.
The Advisory Council began as a small group of dedicated supporters and has since grown into a network of up to 75 active professionals representing industries across Texas and beyond.
Members are selected for their passion, leadership, and willingness to invest their time and expertise in advancing the mission of Rawls College. Council membership is not limited to alumni, its open to anyone who believes in our vision and is ready to make a difference.
Each year, new members are invited to join the Rawls Advisory Council. Membership is a three-year term, with the opportunity to renew for an additional three years based on active engagement and contribution.
Members are expected to:
- Attend two Council meetings per year (typically in the fall and spring semesters)
- Participate in at least one standing committee (Development, Recruitment & Placement, Mentoring, Engagement, or Membership)
- Make a suggested annual financial contribution, determined by the Dean and Executive Committee
- Actively support recruitment, mentorship, and professional development efforts for Rawls students
- Serve as an ambassador for Rawls College within your professional and personal network
Council members may also be asked to speak in classrooms, mentor students, host events, or help connect students with internships and full-time opportunities.
After six years of service, members may transition into Emeritus status, continuing to stay involved in a non-voting, honorary capacity.
As part of the Advisory Council, youll have the opportunity to participate in one of several committees that drive the Councils impact and engagement:
- Membership Committee – Identify and welcome new members who align with the Councils mission and values.
- Development Committee – Assist with fundraising and strategic initiatives that support the Colleges priorities.
- Recruitment & Placement Committee – Help attract top students to Rawls and connect graduates with rewarding careers.
- Mentoring Committee – Develop opportunities for alumni and members to guide students through academic and professional growth.
- Engagement Committee – Foster stronger relationships among Council members, alumni, and the broader Rawls community.
As members progress, leadership opportunities expand. Those who demonstrate commitment and initiative may serve as Committee Chairs, Vice-Chair, or Chair of the Council, guiding the vision and impact of the organization.
The Advisory Council reviews and welcomes new members annually. The nomination period typically occurs each spring, with new members announced before the start of the fall semester.
