The Jerry S. Rawls College of Business hosted the Spring 2019 Career Fair, the largest recruitment event of the semester, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on Feb. 13.
The event, organized by the Rawls Career Management Center (CMC), provided 740 student attendees with an opportunity to network with 118 companies.
"Students can really take advantage of this opportunity to network with recruiters, learn about their career options, and secure interviews for internships and full-time positions," said Barry Broughton, senior director of the CMC. "On the day after the event, it has become common for students to schedule four to six interviews with people they met at the fair."
The companies represented a variety of industries, allowing students from all majors within the college the opportunity to look for internships and full-time positions.
"I think the career fair is great," said Bernardo Ottoni, a senior information technology major at Rawls College. "I was able to talk with several different companies, and I actually landed an interview."
In the days following the career fair, 24 companies conducted over 325 interviews with Rawls College students. Additional companies will be visiting Rawls College throughout the remainder of the semester to conduct interviews.
In addition to learning about specific full-time and internship employment opportunities, the event also provided students a venue to practice their networking skills and develop a base of contacts to use in the future.
Ottoni believes that Rawls College is very unique due to all of the resources available to help students find jobs.
"This was my second time going to the career fair, and I have also used Handshake a lot to help with my job search," Ottoni said. "Handshake is really cool because it matches you with jobs that are directly related to your major."
Handshake is an interactive online student recruitment software available exclusively to Rawls College students and alumni. Through the system, students are able to look for internships or full-time jobs and register for on-campus recruitment events. On average. there are over 1,500 internships and jobs posted in Handshake that are accessible to Rawls College students.
The Fall 2019 Career Fair is scheduled for Oct. 2.
