Rawls Valentine: Megan Childers Lanty and John Lanty

Megan and John Lanty were married in January 2023 and were in Tech Marketing Association, which is where they met.

What is your couple's origin story?

John and I met at the Rawls College of Business through Tech Marketing Association. We had been friends for a long time before we went on what we call our first “date.” John asked me to go to the movies, and I thought it was going to be a group trip, but it ended up just being John and me. We watched Venom, and this was when I truly started to understand John's love for superhero movies. It was also the first time he held my hand, which is when I started to realize we may be more than friends.

Megan and I met in the hallway of the Rawls. We were waiting to interview for officer positions in our student organization. Through that organization, we became great friends and hung out regularly. Our “first date” was to see a movie after our friends, who were supposed to join us, bailed. While we didn't officially begin dating then, it was then when I knew I had feelings for her. We began dating in 2020 after Megan moved to Austin.

What was your partner like as a student?

MCL
As a student, John was very involved. Through Tech Marketing Association, he would go on business trips every semester, play intramural sports and serve as an officer. He also worked at the Career Management Center in the Rawls College of Business and never missed a Texas Tech sporting event. He was, and still is, always surrounded by a group of friends that he would do anything for.

Megan was a very determined and hardworking student. She was actively involved with leadership positions in student orgs at the Rawls, as well as working in the dean's office. We did not have any classes together, but we would meet up at the library or at Rawls to study together. We were both officers in Tech Marketing Association, where we got to spend lots of time together and meet some very wonderful friends.

In what ways has your partner changed since you were students?

MCL
John has taken on more responsibility with his new job since graduation, and he has had less free time for Texas Tech sports (unfortunately).

Megan is very much still the same determined, kind and strong person today as she was during her time at Tech.

What is your favorite memory of Rawls College with your partner?

MCL
My favorite memory of Rawls College with John was getting to go on a business trip through Tech Marketing Association to meet companies and explore Denver, Colorado.

JL
Rather than one specific memory, I really reflect fondly on all our time hanging out in the Rawls at TMA events or talking between classes.
