At the management speaker series event this past fall, Jerry S. Rawls College of Business alumna Chandni Thakrar-Woolam brought the wisdom of her 25 years of IT experience to business students on the Texas Tech campus.
In her presentation, “Thriving in a World of Constant Disruption – My Journey as an IT Leader,” Thakrar-Woolam detailed how entry-level applicants can set themselves apart by drawing from her personal lessons learned and managerial perspective.
“Arm yourself with knowledge and technology trends,” said Thakrar-Woolam.
She stressed that in a rapidly evolving field, recruiters gravitate toward job candidates who consistently seek new information, develop data skills, and build expertise in artificial intelligence.
Additionally, she emphasized the importance of diversifying networks and seeking mentorship, because recruiters prioritize candidates who pursue interpersonal connections over those who utilize digital applications alone.
"As a young professional," she explained, "if you are clear and intentional when pursuing networking or mentorship connections, most industry leaders are eager to assist."
She also encouraged new graduates to be bold and persistent in their career pursuits, and to not be intimidated by the labor market.
“Dont approach your first job with hesitancy and passivity,” she said. “Dont sit silent. Speak up and use your voice even if it shakes.”
A Career Grounded in Learning
Thakrar-Woolam began her IT career as a Cox Communications voice service representative
and steadily evolved into her current role as chief executive officer (CEO) of Zirrus
One. As a self-proclaimed “lifelong learner,” she dedicated herself to understanding
the customer-centric dynamics and operational strategies within every company she
worked with. Before long, her expertise and intrinsic leadership compounded into a
holistic managerial approach that embraces challenges and fosters connection. Now
a respected industry leader, Thakrar-Woolam uses her platform to elevate her company,
inspire women in male-dominated industries, and guide the next generation of IT professionals.
