Faculty from the dance program recently presented a panel at the 2026 National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Conference. Drawing on the conference theme, “Synergy: Uniting to Progress the Field of Dance Education,” we highlighted our collective approach to holistic student development. By embracing the unique expertise and perspectives of each faculty member and fostering partnerships with resources and organizations both on and off campus, our program brings together diverse communities to support a comprehensive student experience.
The presentation focused on five key areas: curriculum, career preparation, mentorship, body and mind wellness, and community engagement and advocacy. Through intentional collaboration in these areas, we have observed meaningful growth in our student population. One example of this commitment is the dedicated time faculty spend with students during semester major reviews and juries, allowing us to better understand their aspirations and provide individualized guidance and support.

As Dr. Charney notes in his column, our responsibility extends beyond training students as artists; we are also preparing them to become engaged and thoughtful citizens. Through a comprehensive and student-centered approach, we strive to recognize each student as an individual, supporting their personal, academic, and artistic development.
Providing opportunities for students to learn from and engage with professionals in the field is a vital part of preparing them for life after graduation. Whether through attending conferences, working with guest artists on campus, or participating in international experiences such as our recent study abroad trip to Spain, students are encouraged to cultivate curiosity, imagination, collaboration, and empathy. Higher education is about exposing students to new ideas, perspectives, and methodologies that challenge assumptions and foster growth as both artists and human beings.

Lillian Searsy, a third-year BA Dance major and one of four undergraduate dance students who attended the conference, reflected on the experience:
“Getting to attend the 2026 National Dance Education Organization Conference was such an incredible opportunity to learn valuable information from educators in the field. I was able to gain new perspectives from dance instructors about how to best support each other, as well as the students we teach. From this experience, I left with valuable information regarding hypermobility, ballet pedagogy, breath work, pointe practices, mental health in dancers, and more. I plan to implement the strategies and resources I gained into my teaching practices and everyday life as a dance student at Texas Tech University.”
Our participation in the NDEO Conference reinforced the value of a collaborative, holistic approach to dance education. By investing in mentorship, experiential learning, wellness, and professional engagement, we are creating opportunities for students to thrive both inside and outside the studio. As we continue to build connections across disciplines, communities, and professions, we remain committed to developing well-rounded artists, educators, and leaders who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to the field and the world around them.
