Playwriting Track

The Playwriting track immerses students in a rich learning environment that balances rigorous academic scholarship with a strong focus on theatre production. 

What Sets Us Apart

In addition to classroom instruction and workshops, M.F.A. students have multiple opportunities to see their plays workshopped and developed. In the past few years, our student playwrights' works have been produced around the world.

Program Highlights

The M.F.A. in Playwriting focuses on developing skills in dramatic writing with an emphasis on writing for the stage. Students take courses across the field of playwriting, script analysis, and dramaturgy.

Admissions

Apply Now

Apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School Application Portal

  • Provide transcripts from all previous college-level study
  • Provide all required supplemental items:
    • 3 letters of recommendation, preferably from sources in theatre or dance
    • CV/Resume
    • Payment of required application fee
    • Scholarly writing sample (minimum of 750 words), preferably on a theatre or dance topic
  • Statement of Purpose
    • Elaborate on your academic, artistic, and/or professional interests and goals specific to the program of study you wish to pursue
    • Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest. This could include your undergraduate studies, previous graduate study, and/or professional work.
  • Sample of Artistic Work
    • Please submit one original full-length play or long one-act play that best represents your work. Collaborations, adaptations, screenplays, television scripts, and musicals will not be accepted. Upon review, applicant may be asked to attend a live interview with faculty. y.
