Young Guns Alumni Award — Philip S. Gibson

A native of Jamaica, Philip moved to the U.S. to attend Prairie View A&M University in 2002. Four years later, after graduating Suma Cum Laude from Prairie View A&M, Philip enrolled in the Personal Financial Planning Program at Texas Tech University. After completing master's level courses, he then went on to complete his doctoral classes and subsequently, his dissertation titled “Three Essays on Mutual Fund Performance”. As a student at TTU, Philip was a proud member of Red to Black, and served as the President of Texas Tech Black Graduate Student Association. Philip was also a member of the Tennis Club, where he represented TTU at the state and national levels. 

A lifelong learner and teacher, Philip started his academic career in 2012 at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. In 2014, he joined the faculty at Winthrop University where he is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Finance and Director of Financial Planning. Philip is not only passionate about teaching the next generation of financial advisors, he also enjoys helping others attain their financial goals. In 2017, Philip launched Elation Wealth LLC, a virtual Fee-Only financial planning firm. In 2019 he transitioned to Carroll Financial, which has recently joined forces with Wealth Enhancement Group.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ and an academic, Philip enjoys creating financial plans that are practical and supported by academic research. Philip has published numerous scholarly articles on investing and retirement planning. His research has been cited by the Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, Reuters, among other well-known media outlets. Philip currently sits on the board of the Academy of Financial Services. He has previously served on the board of Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas.

In 2020, Philip was recognized by InvestmentNews', "40 under 40," highlighting noteworthy, younger financial professionals. He also received the "50 under 50" award in 2020 and 2021 from the Association of African American Financial Advisors.

Philip and his wife Tasheika reside in South Carolina, and they are proud parents of their daughter Zara and son Elijah.
