Professional Organizations

Texas Tech University Professional Financial Planning students are encouraged to join professional organizations.  These organizations help students network with professionals in the financial planning field.

Financial Planning Association® (FPA®)

Primary Aim: FPA® is the community that fosters the value of financial planning and advances the financial planning profession.

Who should join: All PFP Students

Benefits: Excellent networking opportunities, members receive Journal of Financial Planning Magazine with membership, students get a discounted registration for conferences, among many others

The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA)

Organizational mission: To promote the public interest by advancing the financial planning profession and supporting our members consistent with our core values.

Who should join: Students interested in fee only planning

Student membership price: $35 for full-time student pursuing a degree/designation that will lead to a financial planning career

NAPFA Website

Society of Financial Service Professionals (FSP)

Organizational mission: We are committed to: empowering networks that create a professional home identified by a set of core values, beliefs and the opportunity for learning and growth; providing continuing education that is comprehensive, current and practical and which extends the wisdom within our membership; recognizing as members those who abide by our Code of Professional Responsibility.

Benefits: Subscription to Journal of Financial Services Professionals, professional networking opportunities, continuing education programs, among many others.

Academy of Financial Services (AFS)

Organizational mission: The primary objectives and purposes of this organization shall be to: encourage basic and applied research in the area of personal financial planning and financial services; encourage the development of the curricula in the financial services field at the university level; and encourage interaction between financial service professionals and academicians.

Who should join: Doctoral students

Benefits: Network with other researchers, present papers and receive feedback on research

AFS Website

Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE)

Organizational mission: AFCPE is the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.  We're a nonprofit, professional organization dedicated to educating, training, and certifying financial counselors and educators.

Who should join: Students interested in financial counseling and education

Benefits: quarterly newsletter, semi-annual research journal and a discounted price to the annual conference. In addition, AFCPE membership provides a strong network of colleagues in research, education, and practice.
