Tao Ma obtained a PhD in accounting from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to joining Texas Tech University in 2017, he was an assistant professor of accounting at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Professor Ma's current research focuses on firms' R&D investment, auditing and the role of accounting information in capital markets. Professor Ma has published research papers in many leading accounting and finance journals including Contemporary Accounting Research, Review of Accounting Studies, Journal of Financial Reporting, Accounting Horizons and Journal of Corporate Finance.

Professor Ma teaches financial accounting and PhD seminars on capital market research. He received the Carl & Linda Stem Distinguished Faculty Research Award from the Rawls College of Business in 2021.
