Thank You to our 2023 Domestic Violence Awareness Team

Kim Durbin, Student Counseling Center

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because I am a co-facilitator for the SCC Relationship Enhancement Center and witness the lack of awareness in couples in this population. I have a passion in helping people build the healthiest/safest relationships that they can and that has to begin with awareness and understanding of what is unhealthy. Teaching others how to support those in these types of relationships is also a passion of mine. Prevention of further shame for this vulnerable population is extremely important in helping those being hurt seek help. "

Emily Mallernee, University Student Housing

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because everyone deserves a safe, comfortable and supportive love. Education and prevention are the foreground of healthy relationships, and I am passionate about making students aware that safe love and safe relationships exist and when to know that “enough is enough” and that it's okay to walk away and seek help."

Sarah Cuevas, Student Intervention & Prevention Programs

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because love is not meant to hurt! As an undergrad at TTU, I endured a toxic relationship that shattered my world at the time. As a survivor, I believe we can break the cycle by speaking up/out and sharing our truths. Together we can foster a brave and safe space that supports healing, hope and guidance on where to go for support. We are all worthy and deserving of love without conditions, judgement or shame."

Aimee Cameron, Women's & Gender Studies

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because I want to help students find resources and support, and to reduce the incidences of domestic violence by making people aware of the issue."

Dannie Haakinson, RISE

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because all students deserve to be loved in safe, respectful, and healthy ways. I want my fellow students to know that they are not struggling alone, and that we have people and resources that are here for them with anything they may need."

Peyton Sauer, RISE

"I am passionate about DVA because I am a domestic violence survivor, and I believe in equipping students with the social, emotional, and mental education tools to help get out of a tough situation and/or prevent them all together; as well as noticing signs in others and being able to safely intervene."

Amanda McConnell, RISE

"I am passionate about DVAM because I have seen too many of my friends and family members be affected by being in abusive relationships. I want to help make the community more aware of all the resources and help we have to offer to those that need support. You are never alone!"

Loni Jo Crosby, Campus Access and Engagement

"I am passionate about domestic violence prevention because everyone deserves to find love that does not hurt them. And everyone needs to know that they are strong amazing individuals that can find help to leave a tough situation. I want students to know what is considered unhealthy and how to identify when something in a relationship is wrong. Providing education and resources around campus and even RAD training to show just how empowered students are and how much we all deserve healthy and happy relationships."

Che Chavez, Office of Student Conduct

"I am here to help."

Gilbert Carrasco, Campus Access and Engagement

"Domestic violence comes in many forms and often has a negative stigma for the persons being affected.  I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because I have experienced domestic violence in my home growing up and later in a relationship gone bad.  Having seen and felt the shame and guilt, I am dedicated to breaking the silence and stigma surrounding it. I want to provide people with resources of hope, support and healing as they go through this journey to survivorship."

Timon Thomas, Mentor Tech

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because I recognize the urgent need to shed light on this pervasive issue. Having seen the destructive effects of domestic violence, I am dedicated to breaking the silence and stigma surrounding it. My passion is fueled by the desire to empower survivors, educate communities, and work toward a future where no one has to endure the pain and fear of domestic violence. I firmly believe that raising awareness and advocating for change can create a safer and more compassionate world for all."

Jorgann Holgersen,  RISE

"I am passionate about domestic violence awareness and prevention because so often instances of DV occur behind closed doors. The intimate nature of folks who live together, regardless of relationship status, leads to an increased intensity in emotions, causing DV to be some of the most violent and unpredictable situations. I want all students to know that whatever they are going through that they have poeple who care and who have their backs."
